The annual “Thunder In The Valley” was a smashing success this past weekend (August 6th – 8th) and I feel honoured to had been a part of it. Lyndon Cassell Photography was on hand to document Vancouver Island’s only drag racing event and it was much more than I could have ever anticipated. In it’s tenth year (2001 was the first), the event is organized and put off by the Alberni Valley Drag Race Association under the auspecies of president Bill Surrey.
Twig Zeigler
The show was kicked off Friday night with a Show and Shine at Chances RimRock Casino, and an impressive display of antique automobiles. The coolest “Funny Car” I’d ever seen (probably not the absolute coolest ever, but this was the first time I’d seen one, which makes it the coolest!), was on hand. It was Funny Car pioneer Twig Zeigler from Washington, up from the States for a demonstration of his Nitro Funny Car “Pizza Haven”.
I then met R.C.M.P. Const. Gord Buck (a licensed drag racer and Port Alberni native currently stationed in Alberta) with the RCMP’s “Street Legal” campaign there promoting drag racing on “recognized” drag strips and not on the roadways. Const. Buck made sure I got a photo of the trailer displaying the “Alberta’s Fallen Of The 21st Century” wall. This wall honoured those police officers from Alberta who had fallen in the line of duty since the year 2000.
Katrina Bass
Looking for a few photos of the drag cars to present at my photography booth, we decided to head out to the airstrip where all the racers had their trailers setup in the pit. This is where I met Katrina Bass and her rail car. She couldn’t stop smiling and I soon learned that she had just gotten here license which meant this event was going to be her very first.
On the way home myself and my friend Pam decided that a J & L burger would be our last stop before going home and getting a few pictures printed for the booth. We knew there were a couple of sponsored “Funny Cars” in front of the J & L Drive-In so while Pam ordered some food, I proceeded to grab a few shots.
